Dear Health Action Members & Partners,

SAVE THE DATE forFriday, June 4^st from 8:00am-12:00pm. This is an exciting opportunity for the Health Action Council, Committees, Chapters and community partners to come together to continue advancing our value of equity—specifically focusing on racial equity. This convening is in lieu of our June Health Action Council meeting. Please prioritize attending! Many of you attended our Health Action Racial Equity Launch in February of 2020. After that launch, multiple Health Action groups received coaching from our talented trainers, Dr. Curtis Acosta and Carlos Hegadorn. At this event, we will have a chance to hear from Health Action groups and partners about powerful work they are doing and the resulting impact. While this event is a continuation of the initial launch in 2020, all are welcome to and encouraged to attend regardless of your participation last year.

We are thrilled and honored to bring back our two amazing trainers who have been with us on this journey and will continue to offer specific coaching opportunities throughout this year.

A little bit more about Curtis and Carlos:

Dr. Curtis Acosta was a high school teacher for nearly 20 years, where he developed and taught Latinx Literature classes for the renowned Mexican American Studies program in the Tucson. He is an award-winning educator who was named one of the “ Top 10 Latinos to Watch in US Politics” by the Huffington Post. His work was featured in the documentaries Precious Knowledge and Dolores, as well as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He is the founder of the Acosta Educational Partnership, a consultation firm that helps educators create culturally sustaining and humanizing educational practices in their classrooms, schools, and communities.

Dr. Acosta received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, and later obtained a Master’s of Arts degree and Ph.D. in Language, Reading, and Culture from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies at the University of Arizona.

Carlos Ernesto Cuauhtémoc Hagedorn is a Xicano-Filipino teacher and activist who was raised with the values of social justice and love for community. A youth developer for the past 20 years, Carlos has worked with elementary, middle, high school and college students in San Francisco, New York City and Napa Valley. Currently, he is a professor at Napa Valley College, the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University and Prescott College in Arizona. In addition to teaching college classes, Carlos is a Co-founder and Director of the LEGACY Youth Project (LYP), a 5-12th grade ethnic studies youth program dedicated to supporting marginalized youth of the Napa Valley. Hagedorn’s LYP heartwork was nationally recognized in the documentary, The Mask You Live In, as an effective program model. He previously served as a board of trustee for the Napa Valley Unified School District and is a consultant in culturally responsive education for Acosta Educational Partnerships. Carlos holds a B.A. in Raza Studies and an M.A. in Ethnic Studies from San Francisco State University.

En este evento, tendremos la oportunidad de escuchar a los grupos y socios de Health Action sobre el poderoso trabajo que están haciendo y el impacto resultante. Un poco más sobre Curtis y Carlos:

Es el fundador de Acosta Educational Partnership, una empresa de consultoría que ayuda a los educadores a crear prácticas educativas humanizadoras y que sustentan la cultura en sus aulas, escuelas y comunidades.

El Dr. Acosta recibió su Licenciatura en Artes de la Universidad de Willamette en Salem, Oregón, y luego obtuvo una Maestría en Artes y un Doctorado en Lenguaje, Lectura y Cultura de la Universidad de Arizona en Tucson. El trabajo de Hagedorn del corazón LYP fue reconocido a nivel nacional en el documental, “The Mask You Live In,” como un modelo de programa efectivo. Anteriormente se desempeñó como miembro de la junta directiva del Distrito Escolar Unificado del Valle de Napa y es consultor en educación culturalmente receptiva para Acosta Educational Partnerships. Carlos tiene un B.A. en Estudios Raza y una Maestría en Estudios Étnicos de la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco.
