Action Leadership Team Meeting Minutes for April 12, 2018

1. Welcome, Introductions and Announcements

Lisa Wittke Schaffner called the meeting to order at 3:33 PM. and welcomed Vince Harper and Ramona Faith to the meeting. A round of introductions was conducted.

    Ramona Faith moved to approve the agenda and it was seconded.

    Dan Blake motioned to approve the March 15 meeting minutes and it was seconded.

2. Leadership Team Operations

Lisa Wittke Schffner discussed the need for a Chair and Co-Chair. The role for the Chair of the Health Action Leadership Team is to facilitate the meeting, be able to connect, debrief, dialogue and serve for a 1-year term. Barbie Robinson motioned that Bo Greaves is appointed Chair and Ramona Faith Co-Chair for a 1-year term with a transition in July 2019. The group unanimously agreed and would like to share this unanimous vote with the Health Action Council. The vote will be made official at the next May 10th meeting.

Lisa Wittke Schffner discussed the need for recruiting an additional member to the Leadership Team for economic wellness. The group agreed on reaching out to Luther Burbank Housing (Larry), Catholic Charities (Jamie Lynn, Carolyn, Pamela Swan), and the financial industry for possible representatives. The group will reconvene with possible economic wellness representatives during the next May meeting. It was also recommended to reach out to City Council members.

The draft work plan for the Health Action Leadership Team was provided. Kristin Fladseth, Health Services, reviewed the draft work plan in detail with the group. The following feedback was provide:

  • Clarify role of wellness representative for Health Action Leadership Team which is meant to tie into A Comfortable Standard of Living
  • Under Activity 1, Task 1: clarify so strategies are not done at the same time
  • Under Activity 1, Task 2: add Economic Wellness
  • Under Activity 1, Task 4: and vice versa for the chapters to also bubble up concerns from the community
  • Lisa Wittke Schaffner will email Kristin Fladseth a copy of the Economic Development Board’s new strategic plan as well as a report on collective impact to forward to the group
  • Add Activity 1, Task 7: create a shared vision and actions on how to support the Health Action chapters
  • Under Activity 2, Task 1: make description more broad
  • Regarding Activity 2, Task 2 and 3: Vince Harper, Lisa Wittke Shaffner and Ramona Faith will be attending the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training on May 7-8. A debrief will be added to the May 10th Leadership Team agenda. There is still room for other partners to attend the training. Please submit any additional names to Kristin Fladseth.
  • Under Activity 2, Task 4 and 5: Clarify work with “Rethink Health”
  • Add debrief of California Accountable Communities for Health Initiative (CACHI) convening to June Leadership Team agenda as well as how both trainings (EDI and CACHI) fit together.
  • Kristin Fladseth will be inviting Leadership Team members to attend a specific work session of the Accountable Communities for Health Oversight Committee on developing a governance structure for the wellness fund
  • Kristin Fladseth will email out the Catalyst Report to the group
  • Clarify “timeline” on work plan – it is not the due date

Kristin Fladseth proceeded to discuss the Health Action Leadership retreat. Rethink is willing to host a half-day session for the retreat. The group provided the following input on the retreat goals:

  • Debrief on recent trainings and how they connect
  • How do we make a great cross section of community leaders more effective?
  • Recommendations of how to improve effectiveness
  • What is our vision if everyone flourishes? What would that look like?
  • How can the committees leverage their work to have a greater impact?

Krisitin Fladseth will email out a doodle poll (with Thursday, Friday options) to the Health Action Leadership Team members for a potential retreat date.

3. Council Operations

The Youth Membership Opportunities for Sonoma County handout was provided. Lisa Wittke Schaffner reminded the group that youth applications were due May 1st.

The Health Action Council membership list was provided to the group. The handout was meant for the group to reflect on the framework and priority areas and identify if there were sectors missing representation. There are currently 47 members and 5 vacancies.

One of the roles of the Health Action Leadership Team is to monitor attendance and reach out and engage members who may not have the capacity to serve on the Health Action Council. Vince Harper will reach out to Lee Turner regarding membership.

Membership bylaws were discussed. The updated bylaws recommend removing the 5 term cap for membership at the Health Action Council level. Lisa Wittke Schaffner reminded the group that at the last Health Action Council meeting, there was an agreement to continue the conversation on behavioral health. Kristin Fladseth went through the draft agenda items for the next Health Action Council meeting:

  • Review breakout discussion results from last Council meeting
  • Provide options for educating/informing and supporting/aligning with existing efforts
  • Breakout discussion on these options
  • Discuss individual council member role in stewardship
  • Chapter spotlight
  • Bert Whittaker, Sonoma County Regional Parks, reached out to the team about having a presentation on understanding challenges and opportunities for parks. The group recommended to stay on the topic of housing for the June meeting, reach out to the Chapters, and include this presentation in the December meeting.

Kristin Fladseth requested feedback on the Health Action Impact Report. Hard copies were provided to the group. Feedback included:

  • It’s very well done
  • The side panels are great and the colors go with the framework
  • It’s a useful tool to call out what Chapters are doing and educate others
  • It’s useful for the Chapters to see what other Chapters are also doing
  • If members know of specific things that are happening, please contribute to the Impact Report
  • New deadline for report – maybe publish right before the Council meeting

Lisa Wittke Schaffner invited the Health Action Leadership Team to a VIP lunch at the Sonoma County Fair. Lisa will email Kristin Fladseth the information in order to send out a doodle poll and come up with a date.

4. Next Leadership Team Meeting

  • Discuss and provide input on agenda items

5. Upcoming Funding and Technical Assistance Opportunities

Kristin Fladseth shared that Medtronic Foundation has invited Health Action to apply for a $100,000 grant to support community engagement capacity within Health Action. The application is being submitted next Wednesday. If members would like to provide input, please reach out to Kristin. Nora Mallonee Brand, Health Services, shared that Medtronic was looking at using some of the Health Action strategies to set a standard for all of the work they do globally. The application is very high level and asks for a brief description of the outcomes Health Action hopes to achieve and how Health Action plans to use the funding.

Bo Greaves recommended having a discussion during the Leadership Team retreat regarding what the Chapters are doing to link up with the various organizations in the community and how they are approaching the various players in the community.

Kristin Fladseth highlighted some upcoming training opportunities:

  • April 18th work session on Wellness Fund
  • May 7-8, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion training
  • Rethink Health Convening in New Jersey on May 15-17, 2018. There will be a report out at a future Health Action Leadership Team meeting.
  • Rethink Health community engagement planning and implementation
  • Rethink Health inclusive/distributed leadership

The next Health Action Leadership Team meeting agenda will include:

  • Vote on Leadership Team Chair
  • Finalize Health Action Council Meeting
  • Debrief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Training (Item will be moved to discuss at retreat)

Announcements:

  • ieSonoma 2018 Annual Event on June 8, 2018 – The Myth of Average with keynote speaker, Harvard professor and author, Todd Rose. Cost is $25 (discounts available for groups of 10 or more) www.iesonoma.org
  • The Roseland Community Building Initiative Leadership group will be recognized Monday night with a merit award from the City of Santa Rosa for beautifying the community of Roseland.
  • May is Healthcare District month. On May 8th, the Board of Supervisors is doing a proclamation for all the health care districts in Sonoma County.
