2. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Training Debrief

The group shared key takeaways from the May 7th and 8th EDI training. Highlights included:

  • Development of common language: Equity, Inclusion and Power
    Alanna Brogan arrived.
  • The manner in which the conversation about “privilege” was approached was very important. It was a liberating space because we generally don’t have those conversations in mixed company. How do we bring the equity lens from here?
  • What is Health Action missing? Diverse perspectives. How can we approach things differently in Health Action?
  • The conversation around “bias” had a big impact and how people don’t feel valued which impacts their willingness to engage. Laws have changed, but that doesn’t mean that interactions have changed.
  • The conversations around “heterosexual privilege” were powerful.

The importance of “power” and what you do with it - If you are able to be seen as a community power, it’s how you use it. It was suggested that a way to advance this work could be to carry on these difficult conversations and to educate people and think about the biases, power and oppression. Kristin Fladseth shared that there is an opportunity to bring in trainings locally through the California Accountable Communities for Health Initiative (CACHI). It was recommended to introduce the conversation in a particular manner and remind the group of how we have implicit biases through our culture and history. The conversation is more likely to succeed with the right audience and participation.

Kellie Noe discussed the opportunity to look at local data around hiring in certain sectors, employees, lack of diversity in the Santa Rosa School District, access of programs, and how the system is set up.

It was suggested to invite other EDI training participants to the next Health Action Leadership Team meeting. Kristin Fladseth will follow-up with the CACHI presenters for further debrief resources.

3. Council Meeting Discussion

Barbie Robinson will not be available to attend the June 1st Health Action Council meeting. Supervisor Lynda Hopkins will be co-chairing the meeting that will focus on housing. Larry Florin and Margaret VanVliet will be giving a presentation on the housing bond. After the presentation, there will be a break out session among the different sectors. Then, Vince and Ramona will be giving a chapter spotlight. It was recommended to move the chapter highlights to the beginning of the meeting with 10 minutes for each Chapter.
Breakout session recommendations included:

  • Create signs in order to easily identify the breakout group facilitators
  • Before the breakout session, first identify how improving housing is a health issue. This is an issue that if Health Action address successfully, we will improve the health of the community.
  • After the housing presentation, Bo Greaves can speak to the Council on housing as a health issue from the health community perspective.
  • Move the breakout sessions to different spaces within the conference area.

Kristin Fladseth reminded the group of the upcoming ReThink Health Convening in New Jersey. The convening organizers requested that Kristin bring a complex challenge in order to gain brand new insight. The Health Action Leadership Team members recommended to explore what the challenges/constraints are for Health Action being under the Board of Supervisors. Kristin requested that the group reach out to her with any further suggestions.

4.Rippel Foundation Grant Discussion

Kristin Fladseth shared that one of the items that will be discussed at the June Health Action Leadership Team meeting is the $24,000 of funding that is available from participating in the ReThink Health Project. The Health Action Leadership Team will develop a proposal (Example: additional EDI trainings, building community engagement capacity) and discuss it during the next Health Action Leadership Team meeting.

5. Next Leadership Team Meeting

Kristin Fladseth will follow up with members regarding rescheduling the June Health Action Leadership Team meeting to an earlier date to increase attendance. Bo Greaves reminded the group that they would focus on building the synergy among the Health Action Committees and Chapters. Alanna shared that the Chapters wanted to go back to the original proposal of how Health Action could help them. It was suggested to make this a standing item on the agenda.

Dan Blake suggested to add a Cradle to Career, Portrait of a Graduate agenda item to the September Health Action Council meeting in order to gain valuable input while the project is in development.
